Movie Review: This Is The End

I guess this will be my very first movie review. So please bear with me. Before I start, let me first warn you that there will be some spoilers. If you don’t like spoilers, then watch the movie first before you browse through online reviews.

This Is The End

This Is The End

The end of days plot in movies is probably the most rehashed plot in movie/TV history. It’s up there with the Zombie Apocalypse plot, Vampires, and Spy films. Because in every movie genre, it would seem that the apocalypse always finds a way to fit into their timeline.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg

I just recently watched “This is the End”, an apocalyptic comedy that was written by the geniuses behind Pineapple Express, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. It boast a cast of well-known canad… I mean comedians, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Michael Cera. This ensemble cast is completed with the star power of James Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson and Danny McBride. You will also be treated with awesome cameos, from the likes of Emma Watson, to Channing Tatum (which probably is the highlight of all the cameos).

The movie itself is almost like a rip on reality tv. The celebrities are playing themselves and show how they would react to an insane situation… and in this case… the rapture. At first I thought that the religious plot will drag on throughout the movie, but that wasn’t the case. The amount of humor between the actors were enough to keep the dialogues and the scenes at an even pace. Although there were times when scenes don’t work because they were adlibing (and not doing a very good job at it), but when the written dialogue kicks back in, order is quickly restored.

Jonah Hill Possessed

Compels me to what?!

But the movie does have its flaws. There are scenes that feel pretty much unnecessary, like the exorcist scene, where Jay Baruchel tries to exorcise a demon-possessed Jonah Hill, in a manner that is an obvious nod to the movie, The Exorcist.

Also, there are some scenes that I find very nostalgic. Like the time, when the Superbad cast (Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Jonah Hill) were all in one scene.

Although there are times when the CG looks more cartoon-ish than real… it kind of works that way, and blends well with the humorous scenarios. Props to whoever thought of the intro scene for the rapture; it’s one of the cooler parts of the movie.

In conclusion, This is the End is a fun adventure. Although there are times when the story drags on, the amount of humor, and surprising cameos make up for it in some way. It managed to delve into a highly controversial topic (Book of Revelations) with enough humor and wit, while not taking away the morals of its religious origin. Atheists, there will be some religious references, but you would hardly notice that they’re there. “This is the End” is a must see.
